How to Embroider a Shirt & Shirt Pocket

Embroidering on a t-shirt

A plain t-shirt makes a great canvas for some creative machine sewing. Embroidery and applique can be intimidating if you’ve never done it before. You’ll need to know how much fabric to use and where to put the design. Stitching out an embroidered or appliqued design on a t-shirt doesn’t require any special skills.

Why master embroidery on a t-shirt?

Embroidering is an excellent hobby for beginners because they can make something that fits them perfectly while still being inexpensive. T-shirts are very common and easy to get. So, if you do mess one up, you won’t be out much money or time.

Personalized t-shirts are great gifts for kids. I’ve stitched out silly, personalized birthday shirts on my embroidery machine. Appliqued birthday crown with a single initial makes a great gift for a young girl. Embroidered t-shirts make a cool gift for little boys. Weird robots, superheroes symbols, and crazy birthday numbers make great gifts. Adding the child’s name to the shirt makes it even better!

Embroidery is a great career choice if you love sewing, but you need to know how to sew on t-shirt fabric. You should also learn about the different types of embroidery stitches available. Companies and organizations want branded, stitched shirts for their employees. Corporate clients tend to be higher volume than moms looking for a single birthday shirt for their child, so it can be profitable to be a pro at sewing out embroidery designs onto t-shirts.

Where to buy blank t-shirts

T-Shirts can be purchased from many different places, online or offline. Some people prefer to buy them from brick-and-mortar locations because they want to see the product before purchasing it. Others purchase them online because they do not want to deal with shipping costs. When ordering t-shirts, there are many things to consider such as the size of the shirt, the design of the shirt, the material of the shirt, the style of the shirt, the brand of the shirt, and how much the shirt cost. All of these factors make it difficult to order a specific type of t-shirt.

Companies like Jiffy Shorts, Sanmar, S & S Activewear and Alpha-broder are good places to start if you want to sell clothing online. You’ll need to set up an account with them to get started, but once you’ve done so, you’ll have access to thousands of items available for sale. Shipping is free when you purchase more than $100 worth of merchandise, and you can save money by buying larger quantities.

Placement of embroidery and applique designs on a t-shirt

When embroidering on t-shirts, the two most common places to place an embroidery design are over the left breast and high center. Finding the optimal placement spot, lining up and centering the design is difficult when you are new to sewing machine embroidery.

A T-Shirt is a piece of clothing made of cotton or polyester. It is worn by men, women, and children. T-shirts are usually white but may be colored. T-shirts come in different sizes and styles. Some people wear them under other clothes while others wear them alone.

Embroidered designs should be placed as close to the center front of the shirt as possible.

Your design should be 1.5″ above the neckline on smaller shirts. For bigger shirts, the top of the design should be about 2″ above the neckline for children’s shirts and 3″ for adults’ shirts.
For example, if you are sewing a design that is 5″ in height on a child’s shirt, the centre point would be 2″ + 2.5″ 4.5″.

Identify the center point of the design intended to cover the left chest. Turn the t-shirt inside-out and find the center by unfolding it in half. Create another vertical fold line by aligning the first fold line and the side seams. Your new fold line lies between these two lines. Top of the design should be 5″ from the highest part of shoulder seam for a woman’s shirt and 7″ from the highest part for a man’s shirt.

Once I’ve identified the center point of the embroidery design on my shirt, I mark it with an iron-on transfer. Then I stick the iron-on transfer onto the shirt by pressing down firmly. This method works well because the heat melts the adhesive backing into the fabric.

Hooping Silks and t-shirts

Hooping delicate and stretchy items is tricky business. You need to learn how to pre-set your hoop before you start designing. Too tight or too loose could result in hoop burns or distortion.

Hooping is a great way to protect your jewelry. You should never use a tight or rough method when doing so. Hoops can cause damage to delicate pieces, such as pearls, necklaces, rings, etc. A soft brush can fix any marks left by a loose hoop.

Hoop your fabric before using an embroidery machine. Pulling on the fabric while it is still inside the hoop may distort the design. Floating designs helps avoid distortion by keeping the fabric off the ground.

Magnetic hoops are used by many people to help them work on their embroidery projects. This helps reduce problems that may arise when using other methods.

Floating Silk Shirts: How to align the t-shirt on the stabilizer

Silk shirts should be floated on a stabilizer before being sewn into garments. This prevents the fabric from getting burned when sewing. Tear away stabilizers work well for this purpose. Mark the center of the stabilizer and draw horizontal and vertical lines to the edges of the stabilizer.

Cut away stabilizer should be placed on the inside of the shirt. Draw the lines that intersect the center point of the design. Horizontal and vertical lines should be drawn on the stabilizer. Match the lines on the stabilizer to those on the shirt.

To properly position the shirt on a stabilizer, start by folding the shirt inside out. Then, align the folded shirt along the vertical line you pressed with your iron, and then align the folded shirt along a vertical line drawn on the stabilizer. Smooth the shirt in place.

Tips for embroidery and applique on a t-shirt

Proper placement and alignment are not enough to make a great piece of art. You need more than that. There are many things you should consider when making an artwork.

  • When you’re sewing a shirt or other clothing, use a ballpoint needle. This type of needle doesn’t cut into the material, but instead gently pushes it aside while you stitch. Use this type of needle if you want to avoid tearing the fabric.
  • A water-soluble topper is used to add more shine to the stitches. You might want to use this technique if you’re sewing a very nappy material such as a towel or bath mat. Adding a topper can make your stitches look smoother and shinier.
  • Pre-wash applique fabric first before stitching it onto the t-shirt. Cotton broadcloths are usually knits, and they shrink quite a bit. You definitely want to wash, and air dry the applique fabric before stitching to the t-shirt. Otherwise, the applique fabric may shrink while being stitched to the shirt, and it will be bunched up and not lay flat.
  • Apply HeatnBond to applique fabric. The heatnBond will help applique designs stay in place before you tack them down. It also helps applique fabrics from unraveling around the outer edges.
  • Use cloud cover to soften the inside of your shirt. You can iron on the back of a design to cover up the stitching. This product works great for covering up those annoying stitches!
  • Print out the embroidery design to scale to help you place the design on the shirt. When you’re printing your design, make sure to trim it down first before placing it on the shirt. Mark the center point with a marker.
