How to Sew Patches on a Leather Jacket

Leather is one of the most durable materials out there. It can be used for everything from shoes and bags to jackets, pants, and even belts. But leather isn’t perfect; it has its flaws. One of those flaws is that it can easily tear or rip if you don’t take care of it properly.

One way to prevent this problem is by sewing embroidery patches onto your jacket. These patches are made with leather so they won’t fade or crack over time. They also look great! Here’s how to sew them on:

Step 1:

First, make sure your jacket is clean. If it’s dirty, wash it first in warm water. Then dry it thoroughly. You want to get rid of all the dirt and oil before you start sewing.

Step 2:

Next, cut out your patch using the pattern provided. The size of your patch will depend on what type of material you use. For example, if you use real leather, then you should probably go with a larger piece than if you were going to use vinyl.

Step 3:

Once you have your pattern, lay it flat on top of the fabric you plan to use. Make sure the edges line up perfectly. This will ensure that the seams match when you sew them together.

Step 4:

Use an awl to punch holes along both sides of each seam. This will allow you to thread the needle later.

Step 5:

Thread the needle and begin stitching through the hole you just punched. Start at the bottom edge of the patch and work your way around until you reach the opposite side. Don’t worry about making the stitches too long – you can trim them down after you finish sewing.

Step 6:

Continue doing this until you’ve sewn all four sides of the patch. When you’re done, pull the thread tight and tie off the end.

Step 7:

Now you need to attach the patch to your jacket. Take a pair of scissors and carefully snip the threads holding the patch in place. Make sure not to cut any of the stitches you created earlier.

Step 8:

Once you’ve removed the patch, fold it back into position and pin it in place. Using a small amount of glue, stick the patch to your jacket where you pinned it. Be careful not to apply too much pressure as you might damage the leather.

Step 9:

Let the glue dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 10:

To add more detail to your patch, use a sharpie to draw lines across the patch. This will give your patch some depth.

Step 11:

Finally, let the jacket sit overnight. In the morning, check it for any signs of wear and tear. If it looks good, then you’re ready to move on to the final steps.

Step 12:

Remove the pins from your jacket and gently peel away the patch. Be careful not to stretch or wrinkle the leather.

Step 13:

Trim off any excess leather and smooth out the edges of the patch.

Step 14:

Apply another coat of glue to the patch and stick it to your jacket again. Wait for the glue to dry completely before putting the jacket back on.

That’s it! Your new leather patch is now attached to your favorite jacket. Enjoy wearing it!

Conclusion

Your leather patches will last longer if you take care of them properly. It’s important to keep them clean and free of dust. Also, avoid getting them wet. If you do happen to accidentally spill something on them, simply wipe it off immediately.

The patch is attached to the inside of the jacket using industrial strength double-sided tape. The adhesive holds well enough to withstand several washes without peeling or falling off. I’ve had this patch since 2012 and it’s held up really well. I wear mine all the time and it doesn’t bother me at all.
